Conic Sections Part 1

IPOD VIDEO:
In this unit we study the conic sections. These are the curves obtained when a cone is cut by a plane. We find the equations of one of these curves, the parabola, by using an alternative description in terms of points whose distances from a fixed point and a fixed line are equal. We also find the equation of a tangent to a parabola using techniques from calculus, and we use this to prove the reflective property of the parabola.

Equations of a Straight Line Part 1

IPOD VIDEO:
In this unit we find the equation of a straight line, when we are given some information about the line. The information could be the value of its gradient, together with the co-ordinates of a point on the line. Alternatively, the information might be the co-ordinates of two different points on the line. There are several different ways of expressing the final equation, and some are more general than others.

### Staff Resources (1)

Maths EG Teacher Interface

The teacher interface for Maths EG which may be used for computer-aided assessment of maths, stats and numeracy from GCSE to undergraduate level 2. These resources have been made available under a Creative Common licence by Martin Greenhow and Abdulrahman Kamavi, Brunel University. Teachers need to register (top right of screen) and thereafter login to use the system, after which they may use it to compose their own tests by selecting (specifically or randomly) questions from the entire database of questions. Instructions are available from the title page.

Polar co-ordinates

The (x, y) co-ordinates of a point in the plane are called its Cartesian
co-ordinates. But there is another way to specify the position of a point, and
that is to use polar co-ordinates (r, theta). In this unit we explain how to
convert from Cartesian co-ordinates to polar co-ordinates, and back again.

Properties of straight line segments

In this unit we use a system of co-ordinates to find various properties
of the straight line between two points. We find the distance between the two
points and the mid-point of the line joining the two points.

tangents to circles.

### Workbook (2)

Euclidean Geometry

Designed for self-study, this drawing-led introduction to the geometry of Euclid takes the learner from first principles through to constructions and mathematical proofs as well as covering practical applications of the techniques learnt in art and design. It concludes with a study of the pentagon, golden ratio and their surprising mathematical interconnection. The resources comprise a 100-page booklet and supporting interactive resources. These resources have been created by Rich Cochrane and Andrew McGettigan (Central Saint Martins, UAL) and reviewed by Prof Jeremy Gray (Open University). They were funded by a sigma Resource Development grant and contributed to the mathcentre Community Project.
